Sri Lanka- Heavy SF Cluster shelling on 'Safe Zone' kills 73 Civilians injures 160 including 15 Children !!

Mulaitivu: Seventy three civilians including ten children were killed when rain of shells including cluster types of shells fired by Sri Lankan Security Forces (SF) hit government announced new 'Safe Zone' in Puthumathalan, Ampalavanpokanai, and Valaingra madam in Mulaitivu area. At least 73 civilians were killed including 15 children, women and 160 were badly wounded in the heavy shelling according to the sources in Mulaitivu.

15 cluster shells were fired into civilian areas Tuesday alone. 11 children below age 10 have been killed, 4 in the morning, 5 in the night and one of the two children missing in morning was later identified as the child's mother recovered a fragment of its head. Maaththallan hospital was full of weeping mothers who were begging the doctors to save their wounded children from death.

The hospital is struggling to cope with the situation without enough medicine as shelling continued throughout Tuesday night. Recently, a woman was rushed to Maaththallan hospital from Pokka'nai with a cluster bomblet in unexploded state inside her leg, according to the doctors, who had to amputate her leg to save her life.

SF troopers' indiscriminate aerial and shell attacks killed hundreds and many hundreds injured within past few months while displaced over 300,000 including 40,000 children who are living in subhuman conditions.

The humanitarian crisis situation in Vanni only worsening for these innocent civilians as they are facing annihilation as indiscriminate land, sea, and air attacks on them by the Sri Lankan forces in small Mulaitivu area. These people facing severe shortages of food, medicines, drinking water and other basic necessities in this area as severe blockade was imposed upon by the state on them for past many months, an IDP representative said.

US Based rights group, Human Rights Watch (HRW) statement last week said, at least 2000 civilians were killed and over 7000 injured within past two months of shelling by the SF in war zone in Vanni.
